ACMA remakes TV captioning standard following review

Problem being addressed
The deaf and hard of hearing community relies on captioning services to understand and enjoy television programs. The current standard sets out the minimum requirements for the quality of captioning but is sunsetting. The Broadcasting Services Act 1992 requires that standards regarding the quality of captions must be in force at all times.

Problem being addressed
As part of its Secure Australian Jobs Plan, the Australian Government made an election commitment to empower the Fair Work Commission to set minimum standards for ‘employee-like’ workers, including those in the ‘gig’ economy. The Government further committed, as outcomes of the Jobs and Skills Summit 2022, to consider allowing the Fair Work Commission to set minimum standards to ensure the road transport industry is safe, sustainable and viable, as well as to amend laws to allow workers to challenge unfair contracts.

Problem being addressed
As part of its Secure Australian Jobs Plan, the Australian Government made an election commitment to legislate a fair, objective test as to when an employee could be classified as a casual employee, so that people have a clearer pathway to permanent work.

Problem being addressed
The original AANZFTA, which entered into force in January 2010 for Australia, is no longer meeting Australian consumer and business requirements. Rapidly evolving economic environments have meant that AANZFTA no longer delivers the greatest possible benefits for Australian consumers and businesses, and has fallen behind more recently agreed FTA's between AANZFTA parties.
