About

The Office of Impact Analysis (OIA) works to ensure government policy and decisions are supported by the best possible evidence and analysis.

We work with departments and agencies to support detailed, evidence-based assessments of complex policy issues guiding policy makers through the impact analysis process. This includes analysing the pros and cons of different policy options to address the most effective solution and focus on the quality of evidence and analysis.

We publish Dashboard and Detailed Impact Analysis along with consultation and decision regulatory impact statements.

We are located in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

How we can help

Contacting us is a good starting point for your policy journey. We are available to help and support at any stage of the policy process.

We can help you across the Impact Analysis process, including:

  • scoping the policy problem and helping consideration of whether the thresholds in the framework apply
  • building the required evidence base behind your policy proposal identifying and analysing policy options
  • evaluating potential impacts and conducting cost-benefit analysis
  • considering the approach to consultation
  • considering evaluation and implementation.

We also offer a range of resources and training to assist you with impact analysis.

International engagement

As recognised by the OECD, Australia is a leading nation on the delivery of best-practice impact analysis.

More information on Australia’s work with the OECD can be found at OECD in Regulatory Policy.

We welcome opportunities to share information about the Australian Government Impact Analysis Framework with government officials from other nations and visiting delegations. We regularly engage with colleagues around the world to discuss the design and delivery of impact analysis frameworks.
