OIA – who we are and how we can help

Impact Analysis 101

OIA's role

When substantial new policy decisions are being made, they must be supported by an assessment of how the change will impact businesses, individuals and society.

This is known as regulatory impact analysis (RIA) and can be used to produce an Impact Analysis (IA).

OIA works with departments and agencies through the impact analysis process to determine if an IA is required. Our focus is on the quality of evidence and analysis.

Once the policy has been announced, the IA and OIA’s quality assessment is published.

When to contact OIA

Policy makers should contact OIA when starting to draft a new policy proposal (NPP) or legislative instrument. The earlier in process, the more impact analysis can add value to your proposal.

Agencies at any stage of the policy development cycle can access support from OIA.
