Checking if a policy proposal requires Impact Analysis

Impact Analysis 101

Contact OIA when starting to draft a new policy proposal (NPP) to find out if an Impact Analysis is needed.

All policy areas must complete a level of impact analysis, but OIA decides if an Impact Analysis is needed.

Required information

You will need to complete a preliminary assessment or supply information in another format, such as a draft policy proposal.

Information that must be provided to help OIA decide if an Impact Analysis is required includes:

  • overview of the policy problem
  • objectives of Government intervention
  • when policy will be publicly announced or introduced into legislation
  • Identifying the decision maker, such as but not limited to the Prime Minister, Cabinet, Expenditure Review Committee, or your Minister.
  • options available to Government, and
  • general description of the impacts to businesses, community organisations and individuals.
