Problem being addressed
The Multiple Fishery (Closures) Direction No. 1 2014 is scheduled to sunset on 30 April 2024. The Direction is designed to prohibit concession holders in the Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery (WTBF) and Western Skipjack Fishery (WSF) from engaging in fishing activities in waters beyond the Provisional Fisheries Surveillance and Enforcement Line (PFSEL) and the 1997 Perth Treaty Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) boundary. Without the Direction, fishing in these areas of waters is not prohibited.

Proposal
The Multiple Fishery (Closures) Direction No. 1 2014 is scheduled to sunset on 30 April 2024.The proposal is to remake the Direction - with a specific objective of upholding and honouring the mutual understanding and treaties agreed between the Government of Australia and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.

Assessment comments
Consistent with the Government's Policy Impact Analysis requirements for sunsetting instruments, the Australian Fisheries Management Authority has certified that the Multiple Fishery (Closures) Direction No. 1 2014 is operating effectively and efficiently - informed by the consultation process with the Tropical Tuna Management Advisory Committee conducted from 20 July 2023 to 4 August 2023.
