The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) is looking at options to reduce the risk of people slipping, tripping and falling in buildings. In this consultation Regulation Impact Statement (RIS), the ABCB reviews:
- requiring a handrail to be installed in all private stairways to at least one side;
- reducing the variance in the riser and going dimensions of stairways;
- requiring an 865mm high barrier for openable windows where the distance from the floor level to the surface below is greater than one metre;
- requiring a non-climbable zone on balustrades (railings) where the distance from the floor level to the surface below is greater than one metre; and
- setting a maximum height for single steps.
The ABCB released the RIS for public consultation on 21 September 2010. If interested, please make a submission to the ABCB by 5 November 2010. The information provided to the ABCB in submissions will help guide the development of the decision RIS and the Building Code. After consultation has closed, the decision RIS should be provided to the OBPR for approval before the ABCB makes a decision on the proposed changes above. The OBPR has approved the consultation RIS.
