Improving Medicare funded diagnostic imaging services – Regulation Impact Statement for consultation

Department of Health

On 14 May 2015, a Regulation Impact Statement (RIS) on ‘Improving the quality and safety of Medicare funded diagnostic imaging services through the enhancement of regulatory and accreditation requirements’ was released for consultation by the Department of Health. The RIS proposes clarification and upgrading of existing regulatory and accreditation requirements, especially supervision requirements. The changes are expected to reduce inappropriate, unnecessary and poor quality diagnostic imaging services, and thereby reduce costs for Medicare and patients, and unnecessary exposure to radiation for patients. The proposal has been assessed by the Office of Best Practice Regulation (OBPR) as likely to have a measurable but contained impact on the economy with minor impacts on competition. The RIS was prepared by the Department of Health for consultation. The RIS has been certified by the Department of Health and was subject to an early assessment by the OBPR. Interested persons can comment on the RIS and the proposal through the Department of Health website until Thursday, 25 June 2015.
