Problem:

Five instruments made under the Telecommunications (Consumer Protection and Service Standards) Act 1999 that govern the provision of payphones were due to sunset on 1 April 2022 under the Legislation Act 2003. Payphones are still used by many in the community, especially among vulnerable groups, and in the event of natural disasters. Accordingly, the rules have ongoing utility.

Proposal:

Mr Richard Windeyer, Deputy Secretary, Communications and Media Group, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications, has certified that the instruments were operating efficiently and effectively. This certification was informed by a public consultation process. Accordingly, the rules have been remade and consolidated with minor amendments but without significant changes under the Telecommunications (Payphones) Determination 2022.
