In-service safety for automated vehicles

COAG Consultation Regulation Impact Statement – COAG Transport and Infrastructure Council

On 1 July 2019, the National Transport Commission (NTC) released for public consultation, a Regulation Impact Statement (RIS) examining the safe operation of automated vehicles on Australian roads.

The RIS has been prepared in accordance with Council of Australian Governments (COAG) requirements for the purpose of eliciting information to inform a decision by the COAG Transport and Infrastructure Council on possible national regulatory arrangements for the on-road operation of automated vehicles.

Automated vehicles have the potential to provide significant road safety and efficiency benefits to Australian society. However, they may introduce new in-service safety risks that will not be mitigated by the market and are not adequately addressed by current safety regulations. The Consultation RIS considers the role of manufacturers, repairers, registered owners and others, in supporting the safety of automated vehicles on Australian roads. It also considers the legal arrangements needed to support their safe operation.

The Consultation RIS prepared by NTC has been approved by the Office of Best Practice Regulation
