Country of Origin Labelling for Food

COAG Consultation Regulation Impact Statement – Consumer Affairs Australia New Zealand

On 4 December 2015, the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science released a Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Consultation Regulation Impact Statement (RIS) on behalf of Consumer Affairs Australia New Zealand. The Consultation RIS examines changes to improve the country of origin information provided to consumers on food labels. The Consultation RIS examines a number of different factors and options in the context of improving the current country of origin requirements such as the information included on the labels, how such information should be presented, and how the arrangements should apply to imported food. The RIS seeks feedback on the costs and benefits of changes to the country of origin labelling framework for food. The COAG RIS for consultation was prepared by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science and was assessed as adequate by the Office of Best Practice Regulation. The consultation period closes on 29 January 2016.
